Early in the morning on Day 3 of cardigan my hiking group had to set up the dining room for breakfast that morning. There was still some hot chocolate left over from the night before, so we got to have some with our breakfast. After breakfast we all went into our bunk rooms and started packing up our stuff to come home with us before hiking. Then we came back downstairs to set off for our last hike of the trip.
When we set out we started looking around for interesting things we found in the moist atmosphere, and we found a couple of redback salamanders underneath some logs. After we found some of those little guys we walked along a trail to a bridge that went across a small creek. We each grabbed some sticks and had a little race to see whos stick would come around to the other side first. Then we went on to hike for a while until we came across a large stream. We did a lot of sketching, and Tate and Melita fell in the water a few times. We also found some macroinvertebrate species in the water, and identified them.
On day 3 of cardigan there was a lot of movement going on , another theme of geography. For example, in the stream that we examined, there were tiny organisms moving through the water downstream. These organisms had most likely come from the pond at the beginning of the trail, and had gone down the stream flowing from the pond and were swimming down the stream to a new place, maybe somewhere miles away.
As we walked through the woods we saw lots of interesting plants, and even ate a few such as the Indian Cucumber and some wild Mint plants. After that, we studied the level of pH in the water at another small stream and Mr. Woolner told us a story about the hemlock trees. Then, we each went through the nature trail one at a time, and observed what was around us.
On our way back Tate fell off the bridge.
When we got back to the lodge we each grabbed our stuff and packed them in the trailer to go home. We did an activity to wrap our trip, said goodbye to our group leaders, and got on the bus to go back home.
